Change of heart on education regulation to be welcomed - Aled Roberts

December 5, 2012 2:49 PM

Aled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Education in the National Assembly, has welcomed the decision by the Education Minister, Leighton Andrews, to announce his acceptance of a recommendation that his regulatory functions as Minister should be handed over to a new, arm's-length regulatory body. The decision comes just days after the publication of a report into the review of qualifications in Wales and just weeks after a Welsh Liberal Democrat debate in the Senedd calling for the appointment of an independent regulator for Wales.

Commenting on the Minister's Written Statement, Aled Roberts said:

" I very much welcome this decision by the Minister. I am pleased that he has finally accepted that regulation must be separate from Government.

" Our motion in September - which was narrowly lost - called for an independent regulator for Wales and we are pleased that the Review Board agreed with that stance.

"The detailed work will now begin and I look forward to engaging in the scrutiny process.

" I also look forward to the full response from the Deputy Minister at the end of next month.

"Today's decision appears to indicate a more collaborative approach to education in Wales and I hope that will continue."
