Eluned Parrott Response to WG plans to buy Cardiff Airport

December 18, 2012 11:13 AM

Responding to the news that the Welsh Government is to purchase Cardiff Airport, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Minister Eluned Parrott said:

"I have concerns about the practicality and cost to the public about the change of ownership.

"I am not convinced a change of ownership will automatically reverse the decline seen in passenger numbers over the past five years.

"The kind of investment called for by the Welsh Government over the last year is no more affordable to taxpayers than it is to private businesses. I feel the airport will simply become a money pit, sucking in public funds at a time of economic restraint which will deliver no obvious return.

"If the Welsh Government is serious about improving the economic future of Cardiff Airport then we urgently need to see both the business case and cost implications of this purchase.

"Welsh Liberal Democrats strongly believe in and support Cardiff Airport and want to see it grow and prosper for the wider areas benefit."
