William Powell AM welcomes overdue Estyn review into the Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship programme

February 1, 2013 1:34 PM

William Powell, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Environment and Sustainable Development, has warmly welcomed a Welsh Government commitment to finally review the progress, quality and delivery of the Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (ESDGC) programme in Welsh schools and colleges by Estyn.

William Powell AM, Mid and West Wales, said:

"On several occasions in recent months I have raised the perceived loss of focus in the ESDGC programme with Welsh Ministers, only to have my concerns disregarded.

I am glad however that the Welsh Government has had a change of heart and has now committed to addressing these concerns and following the advice of Peter Davies, Sustainable Futures Commissioner, in tasking Estyn to conduct a thematic review.

Education has a central role to play in Sustainable Development over the coming decades. As such the ESDGC must be focused and effective. I warmly welcome this review and await its results."
